How these calculators work

Medical officer payslips in Australia are notoriously difficult to decipher. With varying rules for unrostered overtime, rostered overtime, and shift penalties across states, it's easy to be underpaid.

These free tools are designed for Interns, Residents (RMO/HMO), and Registrars to audit their fortnightly pay.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this data sent to a server?

No. All calculations happen locally on your device (in your browser). We do not store, track, or transmit your salary data.

Why did I make this page?
As doctors, for many of us, our first job and pay slip may be when we start work as an intern. From the start we are never even taught how to read a pay slip, and therefore have no way of knowing whether we are being paid correctly. Looking at my own pay slips, I noticed that errors were frequently being made. So I made this calculator to help others understand and analyze their own pay slips according to their rosters and unrostered overtime claims.
Does this include tax?

No. These calculators estimate your Gross (Pre-Tax) pay. To calculate your take-home pay, you will need to apply Australian income tax brackets and HECS/HELP repayments to the gross figure.

Why does my official payslip differ?

Small discrepancies can occur due to specific hospital payroll software rounding (e.g., 4 decimals vs 2 decimals), salary packaging deductions, or specific local allowances not covered here. This calculator is intended to help you understand your own pay slip and the enterprise agreement penalties. It is not intended as legal or financial advice, but serves to help flag potential pay discrepancies and start conversations to clarify these differences

How are Public Holidays calculated?

Each state handles PH differently. NSW typically pays 150% + a day in lieu. VIC pays 250%. QLD and NT pay 250%. Select the correct PH type in your state's calculator for the most accurate result.
